Naturalisation basics: start with the official conditions

Citizenship rules can include residence, language, knowledge, character and status requirements that differ by country.

Use the citizenship authority’s current checklist and separate eligibility conditions from discretionary or case-specific decisions. Permanent residence and citizenship are not interchangeable.

Dual-nationality consequences, renunciation and registration requirements may involve the applicant’s current country as well as the destination.

Naturalisation is one route to citizenship and is different from citizenship by birth, descent, adoption or special registration. Check the applicant’s possible bases first. For residence-based naturalisation, identify the required status, qualifying period and date from which time is counted.

Residence is only part of the assessment

Authorities may examine absences, language, civic knowledge, tax or social obligations, criminal history, good character and intention to remain connected to the country. Requirements and exemptions vary, and meeting minimum conditions does not remove the authority’s decision role.

Nationality consequences require separate review

Check whether the destination permits multiple citizenship and whether the current country imposes loss, notification, military, tax or documentation consequences. Permanent residence is not citizenship, and a passport application normally follows rather than replaces a citizenship decision.

Naturalisation preparation

  • Identify the exact citizenship basis and responsible authority.
  • Reconstruct residence and absence history with records.
  • Check language, knowledge, character and filing requirements.
  • Review dual-nationality consequences before making irreversible choices.
